2020 in Review: Travel
Like many travel enthusiasts, 2020 was a year on pause. And rightly so, it was the safest option, not only for me, but for everyone around me. But, I did get spend a few hours on planes and a few nights in hotels and so here is my annual summary, starting with brief trip summaries.
February 2020: Disney World
With the time off I had after Seraphic Fire’s two-week Enlightenment Festival, Naomi and I spent a couple days at Disney World. We drove to Orlando area on Thursday and walked around Disney Springs that evening, before spending Friday at Hollywood Studios, including the new Star Wars-themed land, Galaxy’s Edge. We didn’t make it onto Rise of the Resistance, but we did enjoy Smuggler’s Run! We stayed two nights at the Hyatt Place Orlando/Lake Buena Vista, redeeming 24,000 World of Hyatt Points for the stay. The hotel was just a very short drive from the Disney World campus, quite comfortable, and the included breakfast was excellent (with slight variations in the selections each morning).
October 2020: Chicago
At this point in the year, COVID infection rates in both Florida and Illinois were low enough that I felt comfortable making a quick weekend trip to Chicago to visit my parents. It was very refreshing to feel the fall weather, visit some of my favorite spots in the area, and spend time with my parents. I flew American Airlines non-stop both legs, for the very reasonable round-trip price of $80.20 (the actual cash originated as payment for some other intended trip that was cancelled due to COVID-19). I earned 300 AAdvantage miles and 60 World of Hyatt points from the trip (because I have elite status with World of Hyatt and have linked my accounts, I earn one World of Hyatt point per dollar spent on airfare on American Airlines).
Stats Summary:
Air Travel
2 segments, 2398 miles, all in economy class (extra-legroom, however!)
1 carrier (American Airlines)
2 airports (Miami International and O’Hare International)
1 plane type (Airbus A321)
Nights Away from Home
7 hotel nights (4 Hyatt, 2 Airbnb, 1 Marriott), plus 2 nights with family
5 cities, 2 states
Here’s hoping for much more in 2021!
